  • Short plant description HU 105 in culture

Diameter of the culture plant  is ca. 15 cm. Plant height without cephalium 6 cm. The colour of the epidermis is green. Number of ribs is 15. Number of areoles per rib is 6 on plants with cephalium. The shape of the areoles is oval.  The number of radial spines is 5. In some plants one central spine appears. The length of the spines is 1 to 1.8 cm. The shape of the spines is slightly recurved backwards to the plant and the colour is brown/black. The colour of the cephalium is cream/white. The colour of the fruit is white.The position of the stigma is half-way up the secundairy stamens.

 

  • Remarks

This one of the most widely distibuted species. It has many habitats with their fieldnumbers, and consequently small differences in appearance.

  • Habitat

    Directly north of Diamantina in Minas Gerais, Brasil, also further west near Vila Sopa and Barrao de Quacuy etc. between rocks in rocky soil, growing with grasses and often with Bromeliaceae and under low growing shrubs at an altitude of 500 to 1000 m.

Number of areoles per rib is 5 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is round. 
The number of radial spines is 6. 
The length of the spines upwards is 0,5 to 1 cm;  the spines side- and downwards are between 1.5 to 2.5 cm. 
The shape of the spines is slightly recurved backwards to the plant and the colour is pale gray with a dark tip. Young spines are black. 
The colour of the cephalium is gray/white.The colour of the fruit is cream. 
The position of the stigma is at the primary stamens.

In the area of Medanha in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in rocky soil under low growing shrubs.

The colour of the fruit is white with a pink tip. The position of the stigma is at the top of the secundary stamens.

In the area of the airfield of  Diamantina in Minas Gerais. Among low growing shrubs and grasses.

Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 15 cm. 
Plant height without cephalium 9 cm. 
The colour of the epidermis is shiny green. 
The number of ribs is 14. 
Number of areoles per rib is 7 on plants with cephalium. 
The shape of the areoles is oval. The number of radial spines is 5. 
The length of the 2 spines upwards  is 0.5 to 1 cm., the spines side- and downwards are 2 to 3 cm.
The shape of the spines is slightly bent to the plant and the colour is gray with a black tip. 
The colour of the cephalium is cream. 
The colour of the fruit is white. 
The position of the stigma ia half-way up at the secundary stamens.

  • Remarks

This variety of D. placentiformis remains small.

Sometimes this variety is offered as ssp. minor horridulum, but this is no valid description.
