  • Description

    Pfeiffer 1837. 
    Emended by Buining & Brederoo in Discocactus Venlo 1980 page 78-89. 

     

  • Short plantdescription HU347 in culture

    Diameter of the culture plant is ca. 16 cm. 
    Plant height without cephalium 8 cm. 
    The colour of the epidermis is dark green. 
    Number of the sharp ribs 14. 
    Number of areoles per rib is 9 on plants with cephalium. 
    The shape of the areoles is oval. 
    The number of radial spines is 5 to 7. 
    The length of the spines is  between 0.6 cm upwards to 1.6 cm downwards.
    The shape of the spines sidewards is straight and downwards recurved backwards to the plant. The colour of the spines is gray with a black tip. 
    The colour of the cephalium is cream/white. 
    The colour of the fruit is pink/white. 
    The position of the stigma is 3/4 up the secondary stamens.

  • Remarks

    Seedlings  up to one year growth very slowly. When the plants are older there are no problems in cultivation.

  • Habitat

    In the neighbourhood of Grao Mogol, Minas Gerais, Brazil, growth mostly in pure quartzite sand and gravel down hill of the habitat of D. horstii at an altitude of ca. 700-1000 m. between shrubs like thorny Acacias and various kinds of small trees.
